Hidden Histories of London
Hidden Histories is a in print project commissioned By Hutch Agency in Truro for the Central District Alliance London. A highly subscribed series of articles by London authors and journalists for the CDA have been compiled to create the book
Without being able to go to the areas myself I had to rely on photos of the London CDA area and combine it with similar local inspiration including Truro Cathedral, Bodmin Jail and St Ives Church.
The Process
I sketched variations of the areas and tried to play with interesting angles. Once signed off I moved to Procreate on my iPad to retain the hand drawn aesthetic but allow for changes and edibility.
The CDA wanted a map to help readers understand the area and boost tourism. This map was tricky due to the road map of the area not allowing for clean lines and uniform street layouts due to it being a historically rich location. Once the layout was done we distilled the 52 points of interest to find the best and most relevant illustrations whilst still being nicely spread out.
The Illustrations
The illustrations here had to be slightly different from the large pages due to scale. The lines had to be thicker and details simplified. They also required a bit more creativity due to scale allowing for a more fun and interpretive style with unrealistic angles such as Charles Dickens sat at an angle outside of his museum and Bus going off at a funny angle where in reality no road would be.
Note: book in collaboration with Hutch agency. Cover and pages may vary from final product.
